READING NOTES
Characterise the actual exposure
Distinguish airborne coastal deposits from continuous immersion or contact with a process solution. Provide chloride information where available, together with temperature, cleaning substances and periods of drying or stagnation. These are more useful selection inputs than a location label alone.
Consider local features
Stainless steels can suffer pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride containing environments. Show the reviewer the mesh edges, joints, supports and any locations where liquid or deposits may collect. The assessment should address the complete component rather than only a loose wire sample.
DECISION TABLE
Confirm the parameters against the project
Start with the application, then carry the required checks into the enquiry.Swipe horizontally on mobile to view the full table| Decision area | What to assess | Confirm in the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Define the actual application | Environment, function and installation |
| Specification | Confirm product and dimensions | Material, specification, quantity and tolerance |
| Delivery | Align packing and destination | Timing, packing, drawings or photos |
Request an application specific grade
Do not assume that 304, 316 or a higher sounding designation is automatically suitable. Ask the materials specialist to explain the selection basis and any need for representative testing. Include the expected surface condition and fabrication details in that decision.
Make maintenance part of selection
Describe the practical cleaning and inspection access available at the site. Record where the installed component can be examined for local attack and how concerns will be reported. Preserve environmental data and the accepted material reference together, making later changes in water chemistry or maintenance visible when a replacement is ordered.
